With all of the layoffs and firings taking place there are plenty of people needing work right now. It might be a good time to look at becoming a census taker for the U.S. Government. The 2010 census is nearing and Uncle Sam is hiring in your community in order to fill these job openings. The work is not hard, but does require you to canvas your community and gather the necessary information from citizens who live there.
What is a census? Every ten years the U.S. Government conducts a census to determine representation in government and provide direction for the spending of federal dollars in your community for things like roads, parks, housing, schools, and public safety.
What is a census taker? A census taker is one who goes from house to house in your own community and asks questions about concerning the number of individuals who live in the dwelling. There might be other questions as well.
What do you do? You will be gathering information for the U.S. Government for the express purpose of finding out more about demographics (people and numbers of people) in your area. There are actually two positions available. First is a person who updates address lists by going door-to-door and explaining that they are updating the list for the census questionnaire which will arrive via email in 2010.
The second position is for a person who simply conducts the interviews by knocking on the doors and speaking with citizens.
Is it difficult work? The work is not hard, but you will be working a range of hours as you need to catch people when they are home at various times throughout the week.
Are there qualifications? You must meet the following minimum requirements in order to be eligible for these positions:
- Must be able to read, write and speak fluent English
- Must be a U.S. Citizen
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Must pass a written test of basic skills
- Must pass a background check
- Must commit to four days of paid training during the day, evening or weekend.
How much does it pay? It appears that they pay scale depends on where you live, but you can probably expect about $10.00 to $12.00 per hour. Plus there is a mileage re-imbursement for the use of your vehicle as well.
How can I find out more? While it appears that many of the positions are already filled, there are still some available. You can go here to find out more, or you can call 1-866-861-2010 for more information.
