As we usher in the warmest months of the year, more people will be spending time enjoying summer activities. While there are certainly endless ways to improve your budget and cut costs in a tough economy, you must know when you can save and where you should spend money to increase safety. Here are a few reminders that can help you enjoy summertime fun without skimping on safety.
- Backyard safety. What could be more cost effective than enjoying your very own backyard during the summer months. Before you send the kids outside to play, it is important that you have taken certain precautions. Check playground equipment and make repairs where needed. If necessary replace packed surfaces with soft material such as wood chips or mulch to reduce injury in the event of a fall.
- Pool safety. Swimming is by far one of the favorite activities for people of all ages during the hot months of summer. If you have a pool in your backyard, it is imperative that you invest in the proper barriers to prevent accidents. Not only is it required by law to properly fence in all swimming pools, it is the best way to provide a barrier between young children and water. Carefully check your fence to ensure no repair is needed to keep wandering little ones out of harm’s way. You can also purchase door and pool alarms. Make sure life saving devices are in good repair and close at hand in the event of an emergency. If you find anything that needs to be repaired or replaced, do not put it off for another day as it may be the difference between life and death.
- Make sure all windows have proper window guards to prevent children or pets from falling out of opened windows.
- Purchase safety equipment for your child’s summer activities and insist they wear them when engaging in said activities. It may cost a few dollars to outfit your child with this safety equipment (helmets, proper footwear) but the safety of your child must come before monetary concerns.
If your budget does not allow certain repairs or purchases needed to ensure the safety of the children and adults visiting your home, you will have to forfeit certain summertime activities. There are some things that are non-negotiable and providing a safe environment in and around your home is one of them. It is never worth risking someone’s life or safety to save a few bucks. Invest money where it is needed to ensure your friends, family and loved ones have a safe environment to enjoy the summer months.
