In the world of personal finance, what you don’t know can definitely hurt you. There are some indications that more people are trying to improve their financial literacy but the fact remains that a large portion of the population simply does not “get” the basics of good personal finance management. If you are struggling financially or find yourself always trying to stretch your dollars without experiencing a true financial hardship, it may be time to hit the proverbial books and learn what is needed to manage your money better. Here are a few areas where having a solid understanding of personal finance can prevent financial problems in the future and might very well help you improve your current situation.
- Credit card debt. It would seem obvious that using a credit card should not be taken lightly. Unfortunately this wisdom is coming a few years and several thousand dollars too late for some consumers. While it is true that qualifying for credit is more difficult today than it was just a few years ago, there are still people who will be able to get and use credit cards today and in the future. If you are not up to speed with the changes taking place in the industry and the negative consequences that may result from irresponsible use, it is your job to learn all you can about responsible credit card use and how credit card debt can cripple your financial future.
- Buying a home. Again, another area of personal finance that has been in the news for over a year, but an area that must be covered. There are many different types of mortgages for which you can apply. Before you begin your house hunt you would be wise to find out exactly what you are pre-qualified for from a lender to better gauge what type of home to consider. Next…and before you commit, you should look at your own budget and see how much house you can afford to buy. Lenders may be increasing the standards for borrowers however it remains your responsibility to make sure the numbers work. Just because a bank qualifyies you for a certain amount, does not mean you can afford that amount. Many people today are struggling financially or worse, facing foreclosure due to the fact they overextended themselves when buying a home.
- Without savings you have a limited future. It is not only important to pay attention to financial contracts and avoiding debt, everyone must learn the value of saving money for future expenses. These expenses may occur in the immediate future in the form of a financial emergency or down the road in the form of college costs or retirement funds. In any event, without saving money today for future needs you put yourself at risk of always having to rely on credit or loans to pay for expenses outside your normal costs.
Increase your financial literacy to save money today and ensure a secure financial future tomorrow.
