In this economy, many people are having trouble finding jobs. This is especially true for college students. Because of
their busy school schedules, it can be hard to find an accommodating job. But there is a solution that some people may not be aware of – Work Study. Here are some tips to consider about work study programs:
- Some colleges may not offer this, but places such as community colleges usually do. After you have applied for financial aid, such as loans, scholarships, and grants, you can ask your school about work study. If your aid has been accepted and you qualify, you’ll be given a list of jobs you can apply for. While these jobs are not the most glamorous, or the highest paying, they are meant specifically for students. This means that they are usually tailored to fit around your class schedule.
- It may seem a bit pointless to apply for a lower paying job, but over time the money will accumulate and help you at least a little. You’ll have money to spend on food, supplies, and other things that you may need. Having money in your pocket may help you to feel more secure in your college life. Because these jobs are usually low hours, you can look into other jobs to have on top of them. It is not recommended however, unless you were really strapped for cash. It is dangerous to take on a lot of jobs, because you may begin to slack on your schoolwork.
- If you have grants and scholarships, you can still apply to be a part of the work study program. It will not apply against the money you’ve received.
- Many students use the work study program as a platform for jobs in the future. You can pick up a lot of different skills from the work you are a part of. A lot of the work that you may be asked to do is office work, and you may need to have different computer skills.
- Most of the jobs are on campus, so you can work your schedule around times that you are on campus. Sometimes you may have to work on days that you are not on campus, but that is true with any job. If you look into work study you may be pleasantly surprised by how great the opportunity is. You’ll have extra cash in your pocket, and new skills to add to your resume.
