It would seem like common sense that certain life events would require re-evaluating your budget. There are many people however that become so comfortable with the way things were they fail to
make adjustments to reflect the way things actually are in the present. In most cases this is not a conscious decision, rather one that people do not realize until it is too late. The following events each require certain changes to your budget.
-
Birth of a child- Certainly one of the most memorable events in a person’s life is the birth of a child. For obvious reasons this new addition to your family will have a profound effect on your established budget. Begin making adjustments before your child arrives to ensure you have your finances in order. Once your bundle of joy makes his/her appearance there will be little time or energy to spare on revising your budget.
-
Marriage- When you merge your life and finances with another person there will be many changes that should be considered. Depending on how you and your spouse plan on managing your household finances you may find a complete revision is necessary or perhaps only some portions of your budget will change.
-
Divorce- The loss of your spouse’s income will have a profound effect on your budget. In some instances one spouse will receive support from their ex-spouse however it is advisable to try and establish a workable budget based on your own resources.
-
Loss of income- If you find yourself laid off or unemployed you will quickly have to crunch numbers to ensure you do not fall behind on your bills and other financial obligations. In the best case scenario you will have savings to fall back on, however that is not the case for all people. With a total loss of income, you must quickly determine what has to be paid versus what can be put off if necessary.
-
Promotion or bonus- Just as a loss of income signals changes to your budget so does an increase in income. Without adjusting your budget to reflect where the “extra” money will go, you are more likely to absorb it into your day-to-day spending.
You should revise your budget on a regular basis to ensure it is up to date with your current income and expenses. If you fail to do so and continue to work with the same figures despite changes in other circumstances you will surely either go over budget or fail to properly allocate new funds.
