Saving money usually ranks high on everyone’s priorities. An easy way to save is by budgeting. Not only will you see where your money is being spent, but you will be in control of your
spending, which is helpful in any kind of economic climate. Budgeting can be fun and rewarding, by following some easy concepts.
Knowing how much money is left over after paying your bills is very important when trying to save. This amount can be calculated by taking your monthly income and subtracting all of your fixed costs, including an estimate of variable monthly expenses. The amount left, should be how much money is available for miscellaneous expenditures and saving.
Next, make it a goal to write down everything you spend for an entire month that hasn’t been subtracted already from your income. By doing this, you will quickly see how much you are spending on such things as coffee on the way to work or lunch out with co-workers each day. Once you have completed a month’s worth of tracking, you are now ready to determine a couple of categories which need spending limits. This detailed tracking should be done every couple of months when starting out, to help you know where to adjust your spending.
Don’t make the mistake of creating detailed budget categories, because you will never follow the budget if it is too time consuming or complicated. Only those few categories where you overspend should be closely tracked. If you spend too much money in the area of entertaining, for instance, then set aside a certain amount of cash at the beginning or middle of the month and stop when it is gone. This way overspending in this area will not happen and the extra money can go toward savings.
Budgeting doesn’t have to be difficult or complicated. The most important thing is to set an amount you would like to save each month, which is attainable with the amount of money you have available, and be consistent and self disciplined when spending. A monthly overview, once you have determined your spending habits, should be all that is necessary. You will be amazed at where you can cut spending once you have a goal in mind and how much money you can save just by paying attention to your spending.
In this time of recovery it is important to remember this simple yet basic rule in building savings. Too often people get distracted by all the other problems in the economy and fail to recognize money saving strategies that are right at their fingertips. Remember to plan for savings in your budget to ensure you always have that “extra” money available for savings.
