What is Blue Apron & How Does It Work?
Blue Apron is a weekly delivery service that promises to deliver you not only ease in cooking but fresh ingredients, that are pre-measured and individually packaged ready to go for your convenience. Not going to be home the following week or don’t feel like cooking? No problem, Blue Apron gives you the flexibility to skip a week if needed.
Ease of Product
Blue Apron has taken every step necessary to take that uncertainty of how to prepare and cook their product. The recipe cards are detailed and easy to follow. For example, I was asked to mince a clove of garlic. I have never had to do that before but luckily blue apron instructs you to visit your weekly meal page for tips and how-to videos. Sure enough there was a video to instruct me how to properly mince garlic.
Quality of Ingredients
All of the ingredients provided for my meals were fresh. Everything was packaged individually to where I did not have to have measuring cups. Because of curiosity I poured my ¼ cup of coconut milk powder into my ¼ measuring cup to see if it was exact. Everything was also clearly labeled and the recipe card also had details as well as pictures of what each product was.
Who is This Service Geared Towards?
No matter your level of expertise in the kitchen, anyone can do this. Blue Apron’s recipe cards have you moving around your kitchen like a pro. I even had the chance to cook with my four-year-old.
Cons of Using Blue Apron
Throughout my three meal cooking experience with Blue Apron there was one thought that kept coming back to me over and over. The consumer needs to be made aware of what basic household items are needed to prepare and make these meals. For example, I was asked to zest a lime. Luckily, we had a zester in our kitchen. I would hope everyone has knives and cutting boards at their disposal, but again I think what tools you will need to successfully prepare each meal from start to finish needs to be addressed.
I’m am a meat and potatoes kind of guy, whereas my wife is a greens kind of girl. I should also tell you that we live in the south where everything is deep fried. Blue Apron gives you a wide variety of healthy options. This is not something I would normally choose off a menu. There are only 6 meal choices per week. You select your three options out of those six. I narrowed our choices down to:
Spicy Shrimp Coconut Curry (my favorite out of the three), Moroccan Chicken, and a Chipotle-Glazed Meatloaf.
Pros of Using Blue Apron
With that being said I would have to say that out of all three of those choices, they were delicious. Never would I have thought that my favorite would have been Spicy Shrimp Coconut Curry.
The aroma from each meal was absolutely incredible. Spices from the cumin to the tarragon filled my kitchen while I prepared the dish for my wife and I.
Another pro of Blue Apron as a company would be its nutritional information. Each meal comes with a small brochure with all the nutritional information for the entire meal. If you love wine with your meals, Blue Apron provides you with a specific wine that they recommend. These can be directly purchased off the site as well! Lastly, on each recipe card there is a picture of what my end product should look like. I was able to prepare each dish with the cooked meal the way any chef would.
How Blue Apron Stands Out
Blue Apron is the least expensive when it comes to their competitors. Blue Apron offers free delivery and a family sized option. No matter if you’re choosing between the two meal plan or the family plan (feeds four), their portion sizes are very generous. There is also an option for vegetarians.
Is it worth my money?
Absolutely! With the two meal plan you will receive three dinners per week, which comes out to $9.99 per serving. For $60 a week, the two of you are getting high restaurant quality meals. Are there more than two in your household, no problem. Blue Apron offers a family plan for a family of four and also gives you the option to select 2 or 4 recipes a week. Even if you select 4 recipes per week, you are still getting each serving around $9.00! And no matter the meal plan, Blue Apron still ships to your home in the U.S. for free!
