Bob Costas Takes Aim at “Disgraceful” Trump and MAGA “Delusion”

During an appearance on CNN’s ‘Smerconish,’ Bob Costas made some controversial comments about former President Donald Trump. He called him “the most disgraceful figure in modern presidential history.” He also said that Trump’s followers were part of a “toxic cult.”

Speaking about Trump, Costas made his opinion of him very clear. He said that Trump “is by far the most disgraceful figure in modern presidential history. He‘s only become more disgraceful since 2016, and since 2020, he has a bubbling cauldron of loathsome traits.” He then spoke about Trump’s supporters.

Costas continued, speaking about Trump’s supporters. He said, “You have to be in the throes of some sort of toxic delusion in a toxic cult to believe that Donald Trump has ever been, in any sense, emotionally, psychologically, intellectually, or ethically fit to be President of the United States. But his supporters are locked in on that.”

Concerns Over Biden’s Candidacy

However, Costas did not simply criticize Trump. He also expressed concerns about President Joe Biden’s potential second term, focusing in particular on Biden’s age. Costas warned about the dangers of Biden being elected again, suggesting that he does not directly support either candidate for the presidency.

Costas shared his opinions about President Biden, saying he doesn’t have a “cult” like Trump. However, he said, “And at best, he can squeak by Trump. That‘s at best. Or, he could lose to Trump and subject the nation to four more years of this kind of ongoing insanity. Or if he squeaked by, it’s very likely that he cannot complete his second term. He’ll be 86 at the end of it.”

Costas’s comments came shortly after Trump’s recent victory in the South Carolina Republican Primary. Clearly, Trump’s political influence is still significant, as he managed to beat his other Republican rival, Nikki Haley, in her own state. This victory, coupled with Biden’s performance in the Democratic Primary, suggests that the 2024 presidential race is going to be a close one.

Additionally, Trump had a landslide victory in the Iowa Republican presidential caucuses. As such, many people have predicted that he will be the nominee for the Republican Party in the 2024 presidential election. Despite the Biden administration’s claims that the economy is improving, with unemployment dropping and inflation cooling, surveys show that many voters remain unconvinced. They are particularly concerned about wages not keeping up with the cost of living. Polls have shown that most believe Trump will handle the economy better than Biden.

Another important part of Trump’s campaign has been expanding executive power, anti-immigrant policies, isolationism, and a rejection of climate change science. His campaign has also featured language that some people have claimed is violent. It appears he is trying to tap into certain prejudiced and anti-LGBTQ+ opinions to gain support.

Previously, Trump has said he would be a “dictator” temporarily to make immediate policy changes. Although many people criticized him for this comment, political analysts have said this was a deliberate move. They have suggested that Trump is trying to appeal to people seeking radical reform, so he made such a controversial statement to do so.

Rina Shah is a political strategist and commentator. Speaking about Trump’s approach, she said, “DC remains broken, and for that reason, Trump can continue to bang the same drum. His talking points are not fresh. It’s the same stuff he’s been saying for years. It’s even more fascist-sounding. It’s even more dictatorial-sounding. But it still seems to apply to those who are aggrieved with the system.”

Trump has adopted an “America First” approach to foreign policy and has encouraged a non-interventionist view on conflicts like Ukraine and Palestine. Ronald Stockton, a political science professor, also shared his thoughts on Biden. He said, “Trump looks like a man who is really ready for a four-year presidency. And Biden doesn’t. He just looks weak, and he looks ineffective. He is not but he looks that way. And so, that’s a real factor.”
