Former President Donald Trump is currently facing a number of legal battles over many different charges in different states. However, during his 90-minute address at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), Trump expressed his confidence in these legal cases. Unlike previous presidents who have resigned after facing similar charges, Trump said he has no intention to resign and would continue to stay in the fight.
Trump’s Remarks on Persistence
At CPAC, Trump compared his actions with other politicians who have faced legal troubles. He spoke about how many of them chose to resign, whereas he will continue to fight the charges. Instead of giving up, Trump made it clear that he would use his platform to engage with his supporters. Analysts suggest he did not seem nervous about the cases but confident.
Trump’s Statements
He said, “I’ve watched over the years as politicians get indicted. And they start by going to a microphone about two minutes after that. ‘Ladies and gentlemen, I will be resigning from office today. I will be home, go home with my family, my friends, and I will fight for my name.’ Well, that’s the last you ever hear from that poor guy. And with me we have a big voice we have — you can see by this crowd.”
Facing Legal Challenges
Currently, Trump is confronting 91 felony charges across four indictments. These involve a number of charges, such as allegations that he tried to overturn the 2020 election results and allegations that he mishandled classified documents. In New York, he faces several accusations over his business practices.
Charges Across Multiple Jurisdictions
The charges against Trump span several states, including Georgia and Washington, D.C. In these states, he is accused of attempting to overturn the 2020 election results. Additionally, he faces charges in Florida related to classified documents and in New York over falsified business records connected to hush money payments and falsifying business documents.
Civil Litigations and Fines
Apart from the criminal charges, Trump has also been involved in civil cases. Writer E. Jean Carroll filed a lawsuit against him, claiming he sexually assaulted her in the 1990s. Carroll then filed another lawsuit against him, claiming that he had defamed her. Trump was recently ordered to pay her $83.3m in damages.
Trump’s Declaration of Innocence
Throughout his legal troubles, Trump has maintained that he is innocent. In fact, during his CPAC speech, he said, “The only crime I’ve committed is defending America.” This has been a key part of Trump’s defense, as he has continually claimed that the legal cases against him are politically motivated.
Misinformation in Trump’s Speech
Additionally, Trump has repeatedly made unfounded claims. For example, he has often promoted the conspiracy theory that the 2020 election was “stolen” from him. During his CPAC speech, he said, “18 months, we didn’t have one soldier killed in Afghanistan, I was the one that got it — I was the one that had it ready, it was enough, 21 years, that was enough.”
Claims About California
Trump also targeted California, claiming the state had widespread elector fraud during the 2020 election. He said, “I will tell you if God came down and God was the vote checker, I believe [the GOP] would win California, I think it’s so crazy. They send out 36 million ballots, just sent out to people unknown. They’re sent out all over the place. How many people from California know people that get six, seven, eight ballots?”
Not True
However, many political analysts later pointed out that this claim was simply not true. The 18-month period where no American soldiers were killed in Afghanistan happened in the period between Biden and Trump’s presidency, not just during Trump’s tenure. Similarly, there has been no evidence to support Trump’s claims of election fraud.
Being Impeached
Trump also spoke about the previous impeachment process against him, saying, “I have a voice that I can explain it all. Like the laptop from hell when they impeached me. And it turned out I was right after going through all that. And now they say, you know, we shouldn’t have impeached him. He was right, because the laptop from hell showed that I was 100% right.”
Biden Nightmare
Trump spoke about the current situation in America, saying, “So we can break out of this Biden nightmare. It’s a nightmare. Our country is no longer respected. We’re laughed at all over the world. We have to break out of the nightmare that we’re in, and we have it in the grasp to make America richer and safer and stronger and prouder and more beautiful than ever before.”
America Under Attack
He continued, “We’re not respected anywhere anymore. We’re laughed at. We’ve become a joke as a country. For years, you’ve watched as the entire Washington cesspool has been feeding on the wealth and hopes and dreams of hardworking Americans. Really hardworking Americans. They’ve feasted on the profits of job killing trade deals.”
The CPAC Agenda
Every year, the CPAC is an important event for conservatives, as it establishes the key topics that will likely become part of the broader conservative agenda. This includes immigration, economic policies, and LGBTQ+ rights. It also provides a platform for conservative candidates to engage with their audience.
Securing the Border
Trump addressed some of these issues, including immigration, in his speech. He said. “We had the safest border three years ago, we had the safest border in the history of our country. Now we have the worst border in the history of the world. […] We have the best in the world, but we let everyone [in], because we’re fools.”
Media Problems
Trump then spoke about his issues with the media, claiming that it is biased against him. He said, “We have the most corrupt press anywhere. These people are corrupt. They are corrupt. Not all of them. About 92%. Now, you have some wonderful journalists, you really do. But you have. They’re just overwhelmed by the people that know they’re doing so wrong.”
Trump’s Dominance in Republican Politics
During a CPAC straw poll, it was clear that Trump had a secure lead compared to his current rival, Nikki Haley. Coupled with the enthusiastic response to his speech, it is clear that Trump continues to dominate Republican politics. He is overshadowing other potential presidential contenders.
Judgment Day
Trump made several predictions about the upcoming election. He said, “We’re going to straighten out our country. We’re going to bring our country back. For hardworking Americans, November 5 will be our new liberation day. But for the liars and cheaters and fraudsters and censors and impostors who have commandeered our government, it will be their judgment day.”
Calling for Revenge
Trump has repeatedly spoken about getting ‘revenge’ if he wins this election, and his speech at CPAC was no exception. He said, “Your victory will be our ultimate vindication. Your liberty will be our ultimate reward. And the unprecedented success of the United States of America will be my ultimate and absolute revenge. That’s what I want. Success will be our revenge.”
